According to gerontologist (aging expert) David J. Demko, PhD, genes play a minor role in the aging process. Maintaining your youth is all about staying fit, both inside and out. Making these 2006 resolutions could add ten (or more) years to your life (without a minute of physical exercise or diet modification):

Demko outlines a simple, easy-to-follow strategy incorporating physical, mental, nutritional and environmental modifications that will slow the aging process. As Demko states, “He offers no “miracle” cures or dietary supplements, just pure common sense combined with scientific proof”.
Demko, a Florida professor and aging researcher claims to have developed the “Original Death Calculator” while completing his PhD from the University of Michigan in the mid-70’s, just prior to receiving a US Administration on Aging scholarship for advanced studies in aging. Since then, he has refined his calculator and presented his findings to the National Council for the Aging, the American Society on Aging and two Presidential White House Conferences. According to Demko, “The key to a long a healthy life is more than smart genes and dumb luck.”

Anti-Aging Skin Care

The aging of your skin may be inevitable. But why rush it? There are ways to slow down sagging and wrinkles. Using skin creams and treatments may already be a part of your daily grooming regimen. However, topical creams cannot be expected to work alone for full efficacy. The best way to start your anti-aging effort is on the inside.
First of all, are you drinking enough water? There are varying opinions about how much water an individual actually needs for good health, but the general consensus remains that you probably aren't drinking enough. If you're thirsty, your skin is thirsty too -- which means dryness and wrinkles. Hydrate your skin by drinking water regularly.
Drink water . . . but avoid alcohol and soft drinks. The contents of these beverages -- alcohol and caffeine -- dehydrate skin, wreaking havoc on its structure. An acceptable alternative to water is green tea, which is low in caffeine (but enough for a pick-me-up). Green tea, as you probably already know, is loaded with antioxidants that destroy free radicals, which cause aging.
A multivitamin is always a good idea, but our bodies most easily absorb nutrients from food. Include plenty of fruits and vegetables in your diet. In addition to vitamins and minerals, you're fortifying your body with more antioxidants. Blueberries are one of nature's "super foods," having one of the highest antioxidant values.
Exercise! Exercise helps keep us from aging by keeping weight down, working the heart, toning muscles, and getting the blood flowing (to the skin!). People who exercise look younger and feel younger. It's a most beneficial habit to get into.
People who look younger than their age repeatedly reveal one vital secret: getting enough sleep. If you aren't, find ways to work it in. Instead of sitting up in front of the television, turn it off at a reasonable time and take a book to bed. This quiet practice can lead to an easier time getting to sleep -- sometimes the colors and movement of the television keep our brains working even after we've begun to relax.
You may feel that you don't have the time to take care of your skin, but keep in mind: by the time you do "have time," it will be too late. The time to protect your skin is now! Years later, you'll be thanking yourself for it -- and not only will you look younger, you'll feel younger too.

These are sometimes foundcombined in one cream, or can be applied separately.If you want to see results sooner, consider a skin peel. You willsee results fast, without having to wait several months forimprovement. In the past, peels were only available from adermatologist or esthetician. Anti-Aging Cream -- Is There Danger Lurking Within?

The anti-aging industry is booming. Aging baby boomers seem to be obsessed with preserving their youthful look. Anti-aging preparations claim to make you look younger as you get older. But are the ingredients in these products safe?
Here are 10 ingredients to avoid in anti-aging preparations:
Propylene glycol is a strong irritant, a neurotoxin (toxic to the nervous system) and may cause kidney and liver damage. It may cause delayed allergic reactions, acne and contact dermatitis. It absorbs quickly and is a penetration enhancer, i.e. it increases the absorption of other ingredients in the product through the skin into the bloodstream.
Diazolidinyl urea is a skin irritant and a potential cause of dermatitis. It is a formaldehyde releaser. Formaldehyde is a Group 1 carcinogen (known to cause cancer) as determined by the International Agency for Research on Cancer.
Imidazolidinyl urea is a strong irritant. It causes contact dermatitis. It’s also a formaldehyde releaser.
Phenoxyethanol is a skin and eye irritant with a rose fragrance. It can cause contact dermatitis and is harmful if absorbed through the skin.
DMDM hydantoin is another formaldehyde releaser. It may cause contact dermatitis and has cause caused cancer in experimental animals.
Triethanolamine (TEA) is an irritant, a sensitizer and causes contact dermatitis. It may cause the formation of carcinogenic nitrosamines in products containing nitrogen compounds. It may also contain nitrosamine contaminants not listed on the label.
Parabens (ethyl-, methyl-, butyl- and propylparaben) are endocrine disrupters. They disturb the hormonal balance in the body. They are absorbed through the skin and may irritate the skin. They have been found in breast cancer tumors, but it is not known if they had a part in causing the tumors.
PEG-n (4-200) is an eye and skin irritant and is hazardous on large areas of the body. It may be contaminated with dangerous levels of the carcinogen, 1,4-dioxane.
HGH is human growth hormone. Some products may contain HGH or ingredients that stimulate the body to produce it’s own HGH. Ironically, the hormones don't slow the aging process, they just hide the symptoms. Animal studies have shown that those animals which produce more growth hormone in old age have a shorter life span, not longer. Studies have also shown that HGH causes carpal tunnel and diabetes. And it has not been adequately tested.
Ultrasomes, keratinocyte growth factor and DNA enzyme complex are known bioengineered ingredients that are used in some anti-aging products. The biotech industry is not very open about bio-engineered or genetically modified ingredients in cosmetics and personal care products. They’re not required to identify ingredients that are bioengineered and they’re not required to state on the label that a product contains bioengineered ingredients. The safety of bioengineered ingredients has not been adequately studied.
Look for products with safe ingredients like aloe vera, essential oils, shea butter, grape seed oil, emu oil, antioxidants like vitamins A,C and E, green tea and Co-Q10. But also remember, it’s more than just skin care. Slowing the aging process involves eating a healthy diet with lots of healthy anti-oxidant rich foods and enzymes, regular exercise, stress reduction and adequate rest. It’s vitally important to pay attention to your whole body, not just your skin.

As we grow older and are constantly exposed to the UV rays of the sun our skin starts to appear dry and dull. This is the result of the outside layer of the skin getting excessive build up and is not exfoliated on a regular basis. Build-up is especially noticed after we have spent the summer in the sun. It’s more apparent to women since we realize that our make-up doesn't look as fresh and our foundation begins to fade within a couple of hours. Our make-up and foundation is actually being absorbed into the accumulated dead skin cells, which gives a very tired and unhealthy look to the skin.
To keep your skin vibrant and healthy on a regular basis, you must have a regimen that incorporates exfoliation and nourishing the skin. Your regular skin care program does not have to be a department store or drug store solution. You can prepare an all nature skin care program right from your kitchen table and manage to get the same results if not better results that your store bought product promises.
Exfoliation:
You should exfoliate at least 2-3 times per week (daily is even better) to keep the skin’s healthy glow. One solution for exfoliating the skin in an in expensive way is to use sugar. Yes, Sugar! Glycolic acid which is found in most AHA (alpha hydroxyl acid) products is from sugar cane. You can benefit from glycolic acid by using sugar for exfoliation.
Simply mix ½ to 1 teaspoon of sugar in with a small amount of your favorite skin cleanser. Wet your face and massage the cleanser/sugar mixture over your face for 1-2 minutes. Rinse your face with lukewarm water to remove this mixture and you will instantly feel a difference in your skin.
Nourish:
Give your skin a refreshing drink with a simple nourishing facial mask. The ingredients are powerful and can be found in your kitchen. Combine one or more main ingredient with a liquid ingredient for to make a wonderful facial mask. Base your ingredient choices on the health properties of each item.
Base Ingredient:
Honey – It is a humectant (which draws in moisture) and it has antibacterial qualities that also stimulates and smoothes the skin.
Mango - Provides natural fruit enzymes which also exfoliates the skin and the oil in mangos help moisturize.
Avocado - A naturally rich moisturizer has essential fats and oils.
Oatmeal – Moisturizing and slightly exfoliating Liquid Ingredient:
Milk – Enzymes and Lactose acid to exfoliate and milk fat to condition the skin.
Aloe Vera Gel – Healing and softening.
Egg White – tightening and conditioning. You will want to follow your treatments with your favorite hypoallergenic moisturizer. For best results, these treatments can be done 2-3 times a week to help keep your skin youthful and vibrant.
